They create works that prompt critical dialogue, expanding horizons and fostering imaginative visions for change. DisPLACEment is a media arts production and outreach program that brings Indigenous, migrant + refugee youth together to make + share short videos that challenge biases. They creatively explore changing ideas of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’, while shining a light on systems that lead to displacement. Using a combination of media, storytelling, creative facilitation and interactive activities, peer-facilitated workshops are designed to foster intercultural understanding, while inspiring crucial, timely conversations about decolonization to motivate change. <image:title>Indigenous- Muslims Collaborations - Weaving Cultural Identities - Vancouver Biennale - Threads Through Time and Weaving Cultural Identities</image:title>
<image:caption>The Vancouver Biennale’s “Weaving Cultural Identities: Threads Through Time” will be exhibited as part of BACA 2020-- The Biennale d’art contemporain autochtone (BACA) / Contemporary Native Art Biennial at Art Mur, Montreal QC. The exhibition features 5 large weavings by 6 renowned Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh weavers, surrounded by a large Jaquard-woven border, featuring a poem by Muslim Poet Efemeral. As an extension of its first phase “Weaving Cultural Identities: Threads Through Time” invited Indigenous and multi-ethnic weavers to engage in conversations about colonization and subsequent demarcations of unceded lands. Through these reflections weavers created five weavings, channeling their experience of land through the voices of their ancestors. Inspired by this dialogue and in honoring these experiences, a team of Jacquard weavers and a designer created a large border to hold these weavings together, culminating in a 31 by 15 feet rug. Along the border a poem woven in Arabic reflects the weavers’ acknowledgment and respect to Muslim migrant experiences. The Weaving Cultural Identities project is a multipart project by the Vancouver Biennale that brings together Indigenous and Islamic communities in a collaborative exploration of weaving traditions and histories. It was inspired by Saudi Arabian artist, Ajlan Gharem’s public installation Paradise Has Many Gates, a chain-link mosque installed in Sen̓áḵw – Vanier Park, Vancouver BC as part of the 2018-2020 Vancouver Biennale curatorial theme: re-IMAGE-n. By reimagining Vancouver’s Indigenous and migrant communities’ loss of identity and sacred traditions through displacement, we can work towards reintroducing traditional practices that reflect spiritual healing and cultural restoration. <image:caption>As a composer, conductor, and teacher, Hussein Janmohamed has built a career onusing choral music to challenge cultural stereotypes, and reframe Canada’s conversation on race. Growing up as an Ismaili Muslim in rural Alberta taught him that discrimination is an unfortunate fact of life, even in a country celebrated for its multiculturalism. For Muslims and other minorities, he says, the issue is as pressing now as ever. Janmohamed’s compositions often set Ismaili cultural texts to melodic, traditional choral songs. Janmohamed made a name for himself writing pieces reflecting a multicultural perspective. In 2004 he was asked by the Westcoast Sacred Arts Society in Vancouver to compose a piece with Russell Wallace from the Lil’wat nation to explore how Ismaili and Indigenous cultures can be harmonized. Janmohamed’s unique focus on multicultural choral singing garnered success early on in his career, leading to high-profile performances and opportunities to establish diverse choirs. The piece Janmohamed co-wrote with Wallace was performed for His Holiness the Dalai Lama during his visit to Vancouver in 2004. More recently Janmohamed led two global Ismaili music ensembles to commemorate the 80th birthday and Diamond Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan. Since the Vancouver Ismaili Youth Choir, Janmohamed has gone on to be a founding, co-conductor of Cor Flammae-- Canada’s first queer professional choir in Vancouver-- and the Awaaz Ensemble, a cross-cultural acappella choral ensemble in Toronto. As Janmohamed points out:“[The indigenous scholar and elder] Lee Maracle says that if we’re not at the table together, we can’t shape a shared future, and I think for me, how I come to the table is by bringing choral music to the cultures and traditions that I belong to.”According to Janmohamed, while many audiences feel inspired by his work interweaving cultures through music as in the some still don’t understand what his music tries to achieve. They approach him with requests for songs that are less spiritual or songs that sound more ‘Arabic.’ “There is not a great understanding of how music of the Muslim world is diverse or how historically Jews, Muslims, Christians and many other religious communities intersected harmoniously,” he laments. He hopes to change this through his work. Source</image:caption>

In similar gatherings in law schools across the country, students came together to learn about Islam. At Schulich Law a moment of silence served to acknowledge the victims of the recent mosque shooting in Quebec City. “I stand here not looking like what you see as an average Muslim brother or sister, but I feel the pain that they feel,” said Miazek. Speaking of her conversion to Islam in July 2016, Miazek described the religion as “congruent with how I wanted to worship the Creator. God is beneficent and merciful. That’s really been the experience of Islam in my life.” Source</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2019 the Al Rashid Mosque in Edmonton, Canada’s oldest Mosque, published the following reflection piece on Islamic History Month: “For Canadian Muslims in particular, Canadian Islamic Heritage month may serve as a beam of hope for many of us who wish to have the practices of our peaceful religion normalized in our Canadian society, in coexistence with (and held in the same esteem as) rituals and practices of various other religious groups living amongst us here in multicultural Canada. We, as Muslim Canadians, belong to this country and its communities just as much as any other Canadian of any other faith, heritage or upbringing. Additionally, Canadian Islamic month may also be a great opportunity for Canadian Muslims to raise awareness about the determined Muslim pioneers (of Lebanese descent, etc) who settled in Canada in the 19th century onwards and developed strong working partnerships with indigenous counterparts for the purpose of mutual trading and community building. And this designated month may one day serve as an opportunity to take the time to build Muslim-Indigenous interfaith relations here in Alberta and other Canadian provinces and territories, and pay strong tribute to Indigenous peoples role in being the original inhabitants and dwellers of this country that we (as Canadian Muslims) call home. We as Canadian Muslims do share a lot of commonalities with Canadian Indigenous peoples, given that we both identify as visible minorities and both continue to face nuanced types of painful systemic oppression and discrimination while trying to navigate this society.” Source</image:caption>

<image:caption>Canadian Roots Exchange, a national not-for-profit organization, is committed to building bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth. In 2017 they organized United Muslim and Indigenous Voices, the first of a series of events focusing on solidarity and reconciliation in response to religious and racially-motivated attacks.Events are curated to discuss racism, colonialism and Islamophobia from Indigenous and Islamic perspectives, which fits into the organization’s mission to facilitate dialogue and strengthen relationships through leadership programs. Faith leaders and community activists gathered in Toronto to discuss on strengthening the bond between the Muslim and Indigenous communities. The Toronto Foundation and the Inspirit Foundation served as supporting partners, following a report released last year outlining the ongoing discrimination Muslim youth face and the prevailing sentiment that it is only expected to further increase. The panel discussed the importance of educating ourselves about the ’ injustices we face and confronting our own prejudices as part of the decolonization process: “In order to activate yourself, educate yourself.” The audience discussed meaningful forms of solidarity, and the importance of making incremental progress towards fostering friendships, not just between Indigenous and Muslim communities, but between all Canadians. “Solidarity to me looks more like friendship,” said panelist Zainab Amadahy as she recounted a personal experience. It can be small or it can be grand. But at the end of the day, it’s about responsibility, and a meaningful connection to one another. Source</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Me at the Bell Tower started in 2011 when a group of young people became increasingly frustrated with how often they gathered at hospitals and for vigils and funerals. Every Friday evening – rain or shine – North End community members rally next to the bell tower at Selkirk Avenue and Powers Street to tackle a range of issues including child welfare, violence, racism, and reconciliation. Meet Me at the Bell Tower (MMBT) celebrated the movement’s six-year anniversary on Friday, Nov. 17. MMBT is a weekly event organized by Aboriginal Youth Opportunities (AYO) that intends to reconstruct Winnipeg’s North End by mobilizing the youth to address neighbourhood safety . When MMBT was first established, it was driven by residents of the community. Since then, AYO has been able to create momentum by raising the profile of weekly rallies around the larger Winnipeg community. Many organizations like the Winnipeg Chamber of commerce, Winnipeg Labour Council, and Islamic Social Services Association have taken part in co-hosting weekly rallies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The province’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at was visited by their caliph, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad in 2016 to host the inauguration of the province’s largest purpose-built mosque. The Jama’at was also instructed to reach out to local Indigenous communities to establish relationships. This has led to a friendship between the Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation and Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at. As Chief Rodger Redman of the Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation says, the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community started visiting in 2017, organizing food runs and working on the school. In the meantime, Redman has travelled to London (United Kingdom) along with a coalition of First Nations chiefs, elders and young people from across Canada, to share their story with Ahmadiyya Muslims from around the world at the 2018 annual convention - the Jalsa Salana. The local Ahmadiyya Muslim ccomunity extending invitations to Indigenous communities for the annual western conference in Saskatchewan. Since establishing a friendship, the two communities also built a new playground for the youths of Standing Buffalo in 2018, where the Band paid for the materials while the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at volunteered to build it. Since then, Zeeshan Ahmed who is is an Imam for the Regina Chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Canada, has also reached out and visited over 50 different First Nations across Saskatchewan. <image:caption>In 2017, Nursing student Hasan Syed founded Access 2 Clean Water, raising about $21,000 for a campaign to bring clean water to Indigenous people. Syed’s mission was to run from Vancouver to Ottawa, where he trekked more than 5203.26 km in 193 days. Syed, an immigrant to Canada from Pakistan, is the founder of Access 2 Clean Water, a campaign he started in April 2017 to raise awareness and money to help address the clean drinking water crisis affecting the Indigenous populations. While at a community dinner in September 2015 in Thunder Bay where the topic of Canada’s water crisis came up. This prompted Syed to recall his parents running between the kitchen and water cooler in their living when he was five or six living in Pakistan. He said they would boil water and strain it through a cheesecloth into the water cooler. Initially, Syed had wanted to organize a conference dinner to raise awareness, but he felt like as a national issue, a local dinner would not do the issue justice. Syed remembered learning about Canadian icon Terry Fox when he was 10 years old and newly arrived in Canada. Fox had cancer and planned to run across the country to raise funds for cancer research. Months after the dinner, Syed knew what he wanted to do. The idea to travel across the country to raise awareness about the crisis came to Syed in January 2016, and he hit the road in April of 2017, running more than 5203.26 km in 193 days. <image:caption>In 2015, Inuit women mobilized to launch the #DoIMatterNow? Campaign on twitter against the Canadain Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The activists called out Stephen Harper's most controversial policies—including the PM’s policy against wearing veils. With makeshift head scarfs, these activists took pictures decrying the systematic disenfranchisement of Inidgenous people while expressing solidarity with Muslim women, affected by Harper’s policies. It served to build solidarity, while drawing attention to long-standing systemic issues affecting indigenous Canadian women, including the high rates of unresolved kidnappings and murders.
